What is Certified Organic?

August 25, 2008

 Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMO’s*(see definition below). It is an innovative method of farming and production and is increasingly being recognised as being on the leading edge of food and fibre technology into the future. Organics is not just chemical free by testing. It is about the way the product ingredients have been grown, prepared, processed and packaged. The whole system is linked;

Standards to achieve certification are internationally recognised and are assured through annual audits of all certified operators by an independent third party auditor.

What is a GMO?

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered (subtracted from, or added to either the same species or a different species) in order to give it characteristics that it does not have naturally.

Scientists can now transfer genes between species that otherwise would be incapable of mating, for example, a goat and a spider. This is what we call transgenesis. Little is known about the long-term effects of such manipulations on humans, plants, animals and/or the environment. And while some see GMO’s as the way to the future, others believe that scientists have gone too far, tinkering with the essence of life.

This man dropped 17kg (38lbs) in 15 weeks using Miessence FAST Weight Loss Superfood

June 30, 2017

Meet Steve. He approached Organic Healthy Home two days before his birthday. At 176cm (a little over 5’9″) and 112.7kg (nearly 250lbs), he didn’t want to spend any more time trying to lose weight on his own, when all he seemed to be doing was getting heavier each year. He commenced his first three day Miessence FAST that day – even though it meant he would be FASTing on his birthday!! Steve agreed to complete a three-day Miessence FAST every week for ten weeks. As it turned out, Steve was having so much fun that he went for 15 in a row!

steve miessence1

His first Miessence FAST was very challenging. While Steve reported no significant feelings of hunger over the three days, he did experience an unusual craving for crumpets in the middle of the second night!

Following FAST No.2, Steve reported finding it easier to dry his feet after a shower. Perhaps Steve had inflammation that was dissipating.

Steve reported something rather unexpected after FAST No.3 – his hair was returning to its natural dark color!

steve miessence2

Investigations into the nutrient deficiencies that cause grey hair uncovered the following findings:

  1. Grey hair is linked to oxidative stress. Miessence FAST contains antioxidants that mop up the damaging free radicals, reversing this mechanism.
  2. Grey hair is linked to a deficiency of the amino acid L-methionine. Miessence FAST contains a complete amino acid profile which includes L-methionine.
  3. Grey hair is linked to magnesium deficiency. The chlorophyll in the green vegetables in Miessence FAST would have provided Steve with a good hit of magnesium.

Steve was certainly giving his body a nutrient boost! We could see the change in hair colour; he reported improvements in his mobility; and we hoped that his insides were thriving too.

FASTs No.4 and 5 were completed as prescribed. Ever since Steve had started FASTing, he found he had been sleeping better; and had the energy to commence a walking program. Following FAST No.5, Steve indicated that he had increased his walking tolerance; walking more often, and for longer each time.

FASTs No.6, 7 and 8 cruised along nicely. By FAST No.7, Steve had lost 10kg; and 12cm around the waist! It was FAST No.9, however, that gave Steve cause for celebration – he had hit double figures, weighing in at 99.5kg! There is definitely something nice about getting below 100kg. Steve had also gone out and bought his first power saw, so that he could repair his front verandah. He said that in the past, he would have paid someone else to do these sorts of jobs, however he felt so great that he decided to do it himself! He also noted that he did not consume any alcohol this week; whereas previously he was inclined to drink alcohol on his non-FAST days.

Given that Steve’s original goal was to complete ten FASTs, it is worth highlighting his achievements after FAST No.10. Steve weighed in at 98.7kg (that’s a reduction of 14kg); lost 13cm around his waist; and his BMI dropped to 31.8 (Moderately Obese). He reported feeling more agile, motivated and alert. He said he used to feel so tired after lunch that he would have a two hour sleep; and that since commencing Miessence FAST, he had not needed to sleep during the day. He attributed this to the better sleep his was having at night.

Steve decided to continue FASTing each week. He knew he had more weight to lose; and wanted to persevere.

During the week of FAST No.11, Steve painted his verandah. He successfully completed FASTs No.12, 13 and 14 while continuing his home repairs, when the weather allowed. He decided that with the timing of holidays, he would take a two week break after his next Miessence FAST.

This brings us to FAST No.15. Earlier in the program, Steve had really hoped to get down to 95kg. Now, the pressure was on, because he would be taking a break after this Miessence FAST!

Drumroll please…

At the conclusion of FAST No.15,  Steve weighed in at 95.7kg; his waist measured 1114mm; and his BMI was calculated as 30.9 (a whisker away from “Overweight”)!

In 15 weeks, Steve lost 17kg (37.6lbs) of body weight; 17.6cm around his waist; and his BMI brought him out of the “Severely Obese” category into “Moderately Obese”.

steve miessence3

The team at Organic Healthy Home would like to congratulate Steve on his amazing, inspirational results; and look forward to working with him again in the future.

Well done!!!

How to Become a Miessence Representative

The Miessence community is a vibrant group of like-minded people who have a passion for certified organic products for their health, beauty and home.

Our members are doing something wonderful for themselves and their family by using Miessence products but, just as importantly, they are also helping support organic and free trade farmers in emerging communities around the world.

This page describes the steps to becoming a Miessence Independent Representative along with the associated startup and ongoing costs

You can also choose one of the following if you would like to learn more about Miessence and the Miessence business opportunity or if you would like to signup to join our team.

How to Get Started as a Miessence Independent Representative

Go to the signup page you will see that there are three options to choose  from and I’ll describe the differences and benefits of each:
1.Fast Start option
2. Basic Start
3. Representative startup Option

1. Fast Start Option

– It’s FREE to join.

– You get 30% off of your order instead of 10%! (in comparison with the Basic Start Option).

– You get immediately promoted within the company to Bronze Associate which gives you the opportunity to earn more money faster

– Immediate eligibility for the Sponsor Bonus

– FREE Startup Kit valued at more than $50AUD.

You will have then to choose between one of the two pre-built packs of products and that will get you the 300 points that you need to get started with the Fast Start Option.
The difference between the two packs are the skin type that you prefer, like normal skin or dry / sensitive skin.
You can see both of these packages details by clicking in Product Info.

2. Basic Start Option

–  It’s FREE to join.

– You get a 10% off of your order.

– FREE Startup Kit valued at more than $50 AUD

You will have then to choose between one of the two pre-built packs of products and that will get you the 75 points that you need to get started with the Basic Start Option.
The difference between the two packs are the skin type that you prefer, like normal skin or dry / sensitive skin.
You can see both of these packages details by clicking in Product Info.

3. Representative Startup Option

– The fee to enroll is $50 and you will receive a free start up kit values at more than $50 (AUD), to use for yourself to become familiar with the products, or to give them away as samples to potential customers, or sell them.
You will have then 2 options under the representative startup option.

  1. Join with no order.
  2. Join and build your own order.

Get off to a fast start

When I started as a representative with Miessence a little bit over 10 years ago, I selected the Fast Start Option, because it allowed me to learn more about the products I was really interested in, like the certified organic fermented superfoods (and since then they have devellopped their range of products) and to share them right away with my family and friends . You don’t have to select the Fast Start Option if it doesn’t meet your initial budget but I would suggest going with that so that you can get enough products to get you familiar with them and to be able to offer some samples to friends/family/potential customers. It will also get you brought into the company at Bronze Associate which will allow you to expand your business faster

I will help you get your monthly 75 points maintenance order of Miessence products setup after you get signed up. This is usually around $80 – $85 for me depending on which products I order (with the 20% discount that you receive). We personally use some of the products from our maintenance order and we have had great success giving away the rest as free samples to potential customers in our local area

If you would like to begin your journey as a Miessence Independent Representative then go to the signup page and choose from the available startup options above

Some of our best selling products are also available in very affordable sample and trial sizes to allow you to determine if the products are right for you – view sample and trial sizes

If you have any questions at all or if you would like someone to help you determine if this is the right opportunity for you then just use the contact form by clicking here or fill up the form below and a member of our team will be happy to help you as soon as possible.

Is demethicone dangerous?

July 12, 2013

Well, it depends on the answers i get. I googled it (love that term, lol), and found an article that you might enjoy, the way i did.

It is from Christopher Drummond:

Skin Care Ingredient Profile: Dimethicone
What is it?
Dimethicones are unmodified silicones. Wellthat rather sounds pretty harmless. But what does that mean to you and I?
According to one manufacturer, unmodified silicones stay on or near the surface of the skin, producing an occlusive effect. Basically, manufacturers claim that this alone makes dimethicone safe because the molecules are too large to physically enter your body beyond the upper living cells.
There are also claims that Dimethicone associates with the upper layer of drying skin, and these molecules seem to display an aversion to both the water and proteins inside cells. This sounds very plausible, and probably an interesting premise to draw a conclusion that dimethicone is probably pretty harmless.
What is it supposed to do for my skin?
Well, here is the good, the bad, and the ugly of the skin care industry.
Silicone emollients demonstrate occlusive properties. Companies claim that this wonderful benefit traps moisture to the upper layers of skin, thus increasing a moisturizers effectiveness.
Ok, sure, I’ll bite that one– What exactly is an occlusive property?I happen to know, having been a skin and hair care professional in years past to put myself through school where I studied a few years of chemistry and biology.
In reality, dimethicones form a layer on the skin which retains anything and everything beneath it, including impurities, sebum, and bacteria, as well as water. Logically, this would be the reason you want wash thoroughly BEFORE you apply anything with such a property

Essentially if you use a product with this silicone based product, you have just lathered a layer of plastic on your skin. Now if you are into body wraps, I guess that’s exciting. I am just not certain about this whole trapping moisture next to my skin. It’s a great thought, but something about lathering plastic wrap on my face day after day is somewhat disconcerting.
This “barrier” as skin care manufacturers like to call it, sloughs off as the skin renews itself, requiring frequent application to maintain results.
I am not sure what results we are to expect with an occlusive emollient…but do people really believe that dimethicones are going to help your stave off old age, wrinkles, and lines? Anyways…occlusive properties also means clogged pores – leading to pimples, bumps, and blackheads. At least that’s been my experience. If you are an adult around the age of 30 and started to use anti-aging products… and have experienced a sudden onset of acne… chances are, you may be enjoying the full scale benefit of dimethicone… and a potential side effect.
Dimethicones are also used in numerous hair products. It is used to coat the surface of hair and lubricate it, improving combing and detangling, and thus reducing hair loss and breakage. Dimethicone is frequently used in smoothing serums and anti-frizz serums.
Whenever I used a dimethicone based product on my hair, (like a conditioner) Imust wash my body thoroughly AFTER thoroughly rinsing my hair or risk enjoying occlusive properties on sensitive skin and waking up the next day covered in lovely pimples.
Skin doesn’t need chemicals to look healthy it needs natural care and feeding, along with gentle cleansing.Feeding your skin on the inside AND on the outside is the sure way to beautiful skin. In other words, there really isn’t a truly solid reason to use dimethicone in your beauty regimen, even if you have dry skin.
Potential Side Effects?
Studies prove that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, impurities, and bacteria, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. In other words using dimethicone may lead to:
• Pores becoming clogged, and/or potential allergic reactions.
If you have sensitive skin, acne-prone skin or allergic skin occlusive emollients probably will aggravate your situation.
Are there Safety Concerns?
According to several research websites, the following are known tumor promoters and also tend to accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes.
• Dimethicone
• Dimethicone Copolyol
• Cyclomethicone
Hmmm interesting. And the manufacturers tell us that silicone molecules cannot possible be absorbed by our bodies
There is evidence which indicates silicone is toxic to the human body. Perhaps you could tell me how a chemical can’t be absorbed by our bodies, but still be considered a toxic substance if ingested or injected?
According to http://www.ewg.org, there is Insufficient toxicity data to know if dimethicone is safe for use in cosmetics the data used to determine safety levels come from a related chemical. Wow, that is reassuring. But this tends to happen frequently. Like testing your brother’s IQ and granting you automatic genius status because his IQ went through the roof.
Side note: silicones are non-biodegradable, leading to negative environmental impacts, both during the manufacturing process and the disposal process. This in itself for me, both personally and professionally, is another major reason NOT to use this ingredient.
On basis that the little has been found on dimethicone and diemthicone copolyol, they have come to the conclusion that these products do not show ANY negative impact on our health, according to one independent study.
However, these methicones and their side effects (especially long-use effects) actually have not been studied closely. If you happen to know otherwise, I would love to see both the studies and the results of those studies.
With the little information derived on the chemical group of “methicones” (i.e. “phenyl trimethicone”, “dimethicone”, “dimethiconol”, dimethicone copolyol” and “cyclomethicone”) they seem to be very heavily used in the cosmetics industry. Methicones are found in many beauty products and their impacts with regard to health should be investigated more closely.
Still don’t believe silicone based substances are toxic? http://www.medical-library.net/sites/framer.html?/sites/_silicone_implant_disease.html
One of the more interesting controversies is whether or not silicone is harmful. If we are going to look at skin care ingredients, we need to consider potential health issues surrounding the ingredient. Regardless what you believe the fact is, your skin DOES draw from the ingredients you put on.
So we have potentially established the following:
• toxicity level hasn’t been actually determined or established for this exact chemical
• there aren’t a great number of studies publicized concerning the safety of methicone based products
• it is a non-biodegradable chemical
• Its occlusive properties can potentially HARM your skin, even if it eventually sloughs off.
• Although claims that unmodified silicone molecules cannot enter your body, we see cases of silicone toxicity and allergic-like reactions to silicone based products
What products contain this ingredient?
Currently, the EWG cites 1669 products to contain dimethicone.
Should I avoid it?
Dimethicones have been known to cause allergic reactions. Silicone itself has been proven to be toxic in the right levels. Considering dimethicone’s occlusive properties – If you have sensitive or reactive skin, I recommend that you consider eliminating this silicone derived chemical from your skin care regimen.

Hope i answered your questions, although i still don’t know if there is any sulfur in there as asked previously!!

Why do we need Probiotics?

July 4, 2013

Image Did you know that over 70% of Americans have an ongoing candida infection and don’t even know it? Candida is yeast (fungus) that is natural in most mammals. However, there is a specific strain of candida – Candida Albicans – that causes a lot of problems and symptoms include everything from chronic fatigue symptoms, weak immune function, migraines, brain fog, and frequent colds and infections, rashes, and much more. The problem starts with an imbalance in your gut flora… You see there are actually ten times as many bacterial cells in your body as there are human cells! And the majority of these reside in your gut. Scientists refer to this as the gut ecology. The problem is that most people’s gut ecology is way out of balance and that’s when the Candida can grow too much and start to cause problems. So many people who have candida infections are just told they’re crazy by their doctors or that there’s nothing actually wrong with them because the symptoms “can’t be explained.” Others are just diagnosed with the symptoms of candida – chronic fatigue, a respiratory infection, muscle pain, migraines, etc. and then given drugs and treatments to treat the symptoms – but never get to solve the underlying problem – the Candida overgrowth. What can you do to get your gut ecology back in balance and say goodbye to Candida forever? According to YeastInfectionNoMore.com, there are several steps that are safe, easy and everyone should be doing anyway for overall health: 1. Stop taking antibiotics Antibiotics destroy bad bacteria. We all know that – that’s why we take them. The problem is that you have Trillions of bacterial cells in your body and they are necessary for good health. You have to have the right bacteria in the right balance to even digest your food and be alive, nonetheless just to feel good and healthy. When you take antibiotics you damage this natural balance of your gut ecology and that gives Candida and other bad bacteria the chance to grow out of control and make you sick. 2. Take probiotics Probiotics can help you regrow and rebalance your gut ecology. Almost all of us have had antibiotics in our lifetime and so we need to get back in balance. Most people should supplement for at least one year with probiotics in order to get their gut ecology back to normal and healthy. There is a plethora of Probiotics to choose from. Some comes in a form of pills, powders and liquids. Some are made with fecal matter some are naturally engineered, and others organically certified. Here’s a video that explains you all the most important things to need to know when you want to purchase a  probiotic. Click here to watch it! You will then be able to make a wise decision for yourself. Your New year health’s resolutions.

December 31, 2008

Happy new year to everybody!

Hopefully you enjoyed your Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day; Wow, sound like a lot, but really, did you celebrated a bit too much? Too much wine? liquor, cocktails…and the list can go on!

You have just made your new year’s resolutions(loosing weight, reducing drinking, gym, health, etc…) and you are already regretting the holiday’s abuses.

So, what it is to do, to feel better, to energize, revitalise, rejuvenate yourself?

There is basically only one answer to that, and it is called Antioxidants!

There are so many of them on the market, offline and online. So how are you going to select the right product?

Antioxidants are found anywhere nowadays; In green tea, coffee, fruits, veggies, marine algae, etc…And many companies are promoting them (you can’t miss them, me,me,me,me), in pills, liquids and powder formulas. So, i was wondering why in the first place would i need antioxidants? What are they? What they do? Everything about them, and why they are so popular these days?

Dr Karen Coates gives us her point of view:

Antioxidants, an essential utensil in our anti-ageing tool box:

What makes the difference between average health and optimal health? The answer lies not

in the genetic blueprint of your family tree, but in our body’s ability to be well nourished and

‘rustproofed’.

Our three top killers in the developed world are cardiovascular disease (encompassing heart

attack and stroke), cancer, and Type 2 Diabetes. Your risk of developing any of these diseases

has been proven to be directly related to the amount of antioxidants your diet provides.

Antioxidants found in food protect our cells against the damage done by free radicals, known as oxidative stress.

Damage is particularly intense in the powerhouse of our cells known as the mitochondria. Free radicals are unbound oxygen

molecules that bombard and damage our cells and capillaries. Recent research indicates that poorly nourished cells are

more vulnerable to oxidative stress and have a higher requirement for antioxidant-rich food and supplements. This creates

a double insult, with poor nutrition leading to micro-malnourished, vulnerable cells and an increased need for antioxidant

protection in the presence of a diet inadequate for optimal health.

Most natural therapists will be aware of the importance of antioxidants for skin health, rejuvenation, collagen production

and the prevention of skin cancers. More importantly antioxidants forge a resilient barrier of protection to cells undergoing

renewal. It is at this time of cell division that the mistakes in genetic messages may lead to uncontrolled growth which we

call cancer.

Incredibly, medical research has only recently confirmed what natural therapists and vets have known for decades: that over

70 percent of the Australian population are micronutrient-malnourished. Regardless of body weight the average Australian

on an average Australian diet (the traditional meat and three veggies for dinner) is lacking in at least one or more essential

nutrients, in particular the antioxidant group of nutrients.

The cause for this is clear. In 1992 a World Health Organisation survey reported that Australian soils are the most mineral

and vitamin deficient of all the soils of the world’s continents. It makes commonsense that the fruit, vegetables and grains

cultivated on these soils are also lacking in the nutrients required for optimal human health. Our vets regularly provide

supplements for cattle, sheep and horses to prevent and treat nutritional deficiencies, but the

medical profession has been kept in the dark about these facts for years.

How to assess your your risk of oxidative stress?

Live blood analysis is a useful health practitioner tool. This can

instantly confirm the cellular consequences of poor diet, oxidative

stress, by examining a droplet of fresh blood under a microscope.

These damaged cells look somewhat like a dried up sultana on

live blood analysis. Compare this to a healthy hydrated cell, full of

antioxidants, which looks like a luscious, full-bodied grape.

The most important defence we have against unfavourable

environmental chemicals and our major health challenges is a well

nourished body. Sensible supplementation is essential for optimal

health when deficiencies are suspected. Plant extracted organic

supplements, with high ORAC scores and phenolic content are

preferred, together with a balanced organic diet and a healthy

bowel.

Dr Karen Coates.

So we got an answer on what antioxidants are, what they do, why use them.

Now, how about comparing a few of them on the Onegroup’s Newsletter? (pages 2 and 3).

https://www.onegrp.com/docs/members/Marketing/FactSheets/BerryRadicalFactSheet.pdf

Still feel like scratching your head, and wondering ……

Well, i’ve got my own story if you are interested!

Spring  2007, i developped pain on my right knee. Kind of pain that you don’t get used to….Working in the hotel industry, fine dining in particular, the going up and down (dining-room and kitchen) the stairs didn’t help, the hours standing up either; Then i also love playing tennis, and at home i mow the lawn;

All these efforts took their toll on my knee. I was moving slowly, no more mowing, tennis, taking pain killers, pills. Then one day, i decided to take an MRI, and go see the specialist. Diagnost was tear of the right minuscus, and the horthopedist recommendation was The Surgery, which of course i declined. I was more interested to try physical therapy first, before anything else.

During the same time, Onegroup (company i represent), came up with a  new product called Berry Radical, certified organic antioxidant. The timing couldn’t have been better. I ordered the antioxidant, used it, and after one week already, i noticed that the PAIN was gone. I simply couldn’t believe it. I tried to think what it could be, that was the reason why i suddenly felt better? I came fast to the conclusion that Berry Radical was the reason why i was feeling much better.

The following days, i was reminded by my co-workers how well i was running up and down the stairs. My tennis partners were thrilled about my come back, and i was happy to tell the lanscaper to take a hike. This is my testimonial, my own story about the success of this product, and i will tell you more about it in the next post. If you have comments and questions, feel free.

Should Genetically Modified Organism Products be labelled?

December 31, 2008

I was so glad when i got my O.C.A Newsletter(Organic Consumer Association)

I am always interested to read about what’s going on in my community or around the world.

Now this is very scary ladies and gentlemen, and i am going to tell you why!! G.M Products are not labeled yet, and are not required to be in the U.S.A, although it is in other countries. It simply means that any corn (or other products like soy, products that you are consumming could be a G.M Product.

I was at work a morning,(i work in a hotel, Manhattan upper east side), and i was looking for soy milk for one of my costumers. The box i picked up was a korean soy milk product, and the reading on the label was certified by a third independent party that the product wasn’t made from Genetically Modified Soy Bean.

So, i was really curious to find soy milk made here in the U.S.A, only to find out that there was no mentions of any kind about G.m or non G.M Product!!!

You can’t believe how upset i got.

Relating to the corn story, does your cereals mention anything about it? Corn of any form, in can? frozen? drinks made with high fructose corn syrup? and on and on….Let’s not forget the soy bean oil as well, like the one used to make your mayonaise, lol.

It’s a never ending story.

The problem is that those Genetically Modified Organism have never been tested on humans before, may be on animals, although i’m not sure. But they already had a while back people who had consumed G.M Corn and got rushed to hospitals…..

What’s in your strawberries?

September 29, 2008

I am wondering what is the difference between a strawberry and a certified organic strawberry. The price you might tell me, and yes, that is enough reason for some people to turn around and go for the cheaper ones. How about the taste? they both taste good.how about the benefits for your health, or the environment ? here’s what i learn from Samuel Fromartz, author of “Organic, inc”

On the conventional land, they fumigated the soil with methyl bromide and chloropicrin, a commonly used and highly effective mix for contrilling soil diseases, weeds, and pests. In this process, a tractor with a deep metal shank attached to the front end rolls down the field, pumping gaz into the siol. Plastic rolls off the back, and workers shovel dirt over the edges to seal in the gaz. They can smell the fugimant if it leaks, however, because chloropicrin, a component of TEAR GAZ, is used as a warning agent. (the more highly toxic methyl bromide is colorless and odorless.) The plastic is often left on the ground as a mulch to inhibit weed growth. When the are ready to plant, workers cut holes in the plastic and set the young strawberry cultivars in the soil. The erst of the conventional regime consisted of dipping the plants’ roots ina preplanting fungicide, applying time-release chemical fertiliser, and spraying pesticides to control Lygus bugs and two-spotted spider mites, common pests that reduce yield.

In the Organic plot, researchers spread compost made from dairy waste, alfalfa, cotton-gin trash, and apples. They applied blood-meal and bonemeal fertilizres (material that break down slowly in the soil, providing a steady supply of nutrients rather than a burst of food, In place of fumigants to control weeds, they rolled out plastic mulch and relied on hand hoes. And instead of chemical insecticides, they released a predatory mite (phytoseiulus persimilis), which has been used in Europe but not yet common in California-that reproduces rapidly and feeds on the two-spotted spider mite.

Measuring soil nutrients and pest populations, they found the predatory mites performed as well as insecticides. They also found traces of DDT in the soil sixteen years after it had been banned by the EPA.( This is not unusual on crop land that had been converted to organic production, since older, now banned pesticides may persist in the soil for decades.) As for production, the study found that while the organic plots had a 38 percent lower yield in the first year, profits were only 9 percent lower, which showed how the price premium for organic strawberries offset lower productivity.

This is a quote that Stephen Gliessman (Ecologist) wrotte in his book”Agroecology”: Ecological processes in sustainable agriculture, conventional agriculture’s primary goals of high yield and output aren’t enough: “Modern agriculture is unsustainable-it cannot continue to produce enough food over the long term because it deteriorates the conditions that make agriculture possible.”

On the health point of view, strawberries are a rich source of Quercetin, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins,

Quercetin has been shown to protect colon, breast, ovarian and gastrointestinal cells against cancer growth. It has also show that it protects strokes, cataracts, virus and allergies.

I would like to know if you have any comments on that.

Organic standards in Australia are under threat!

September 22, 2008

The new proposed national organic standard will allow certifiers to interpret the standards very loosely.

Potentially, a product made of 30% synthetic emulsifier, 10% organic ingredients and 60% water could be certified organic.

This is totally unacceptable.

Toxic ingredients in our daily life.

September 17, 2008

Toxic Ingredients

How safe are the ingredients used in your current brand of skin care products? How certain are you that they do not contain chemicals that could be harmful to you and/or your children?

If you are not sure, use this toxic ingredient directory below and find out for yourself. This information has been sourced from Material Safety Data Sheets (or MSDS), which is recognised as the international standard for providing safety information about chemical ingredients used by humans.

Note: If you cannot locate a particular chemical ingredient above or would like to research more ingredients, you can utilize the “SIRI MSDS” online chemical database search facility by clicking on the link below.

Toxic Ingredient Directory

  1. 1,4-dioxane
A carcinogenic contaminant of cosmetic products. Almost 50% of cosmetics containing ethoxylated surfactants were found to contain dioxane. See Ethoxylated surfactantsFrom Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):
1,4-DIOXANE MAY EXERT ITS EFFECTS THROUGH INHALATION, SKIN ABSORPTION, AND INGESTION.
1,4-DIOXANE IS LISTED AS A CARCINOGEN.

EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE: 1,4-DIOXANE IS AN EYE AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE IRRITANT, PRIMARY SKIN IRRITANT, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSANT, NEPHROTOXIN, AND HEPATOTOXIN.

Potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. This could increase the appearance of aging and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria. Used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners. See Ethoxylated surfactants

  1. Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen
See Anionic Surfactants

  1. Propylene/Butylene Glycol
Propylene glycol (PG) is a petroleum derivative. It penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. Commonly used to make extracts from herbs. PG is strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! The EPA considers PG so toxic that it requires workers to wear protective gloves, clothing and goggles and to dispose of any PG solutions by burying them in the ground. Because PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against skin contact to prevent consequences such as brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. But there isn’t even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than in most industrial applications. From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):
Health Hazard Acute And Chronic

INHALATION: May cause respiratory and throat Irritation, central nervous system depression, blood and kidney disorders. May cause Nystagmus, Lymphocytosis.

Toxic, causes skin rashes and allergic reactions.See Nitrosating agents

From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):
SKIN: PROLONGED OR repEATED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION. MAY CAUSE MORE SEVERE RESPONSE IF SKIN IS DAMP.

MAY BE A WEAK SKIN SENSITIZER IN SUSCEPTIBLE INDIVIDUALS AT GREATER THAN 1% IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION.

  1. Rancid Natural Emollients
Natural oils used in cosmetics should be cold pressed. The refined vegetable oils found on supermarket shelves and many health food stores which lack colour, odour and taste are devoid of nutrients, essential fatty acids, vitamins and unsaponifiables – all valuable skin conditioning agents! They also contain poisonous “trans” fatty acids as a result of the refining process.Another important factor to consider with creams made from plant oil is the use-by date. The most beneficial plant oils (like rosehip, borage and evening primrose oils) are polyunsaturated, which means they oxidise and go rancid fairly quickly (about 6 months). Most off-the-shelf cosmetics have a shelf life of three years. Rancid oils are harmful, they form free-radicals, which damage and age your skin.

  1. Silicone derived emollients
Silicone emollients are occlusive – that is they coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it, and do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.)Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.
